New approval granted to Tasmanian iron ore mine

Following on from our earlier post on the successful challenge by the Tarkine National Coalition Incorporated in the Federal Court to the validity of the former Commonwealth Minister’s approval of an iron ore mine in north west Tasmania, the current Minister has, on 31 July 2013, granted Shree Minerals Limited a new approval to proceed with the proposed mine.

The Minister’s media release states,

“In considering the grant of an approval, I had regard to the impact such a development might have on “matters of national environmental significance” – in particular, on a number of listed threatened flora and fauna species. I have considered a wide range of comments and advice, including relevant approved conservation advices.”

Some newspaper articles have indicated that the Tarkine National Coalition Incorporated may challenge this approval.
